En menos de 24 horas, Volgogrado ha sufrido dos atentados terroristas en los que murieron 33 personas y que provocaron al menos 80 heridos.

Dieciocho personas han muerto y más de 40 han resultado heridas en la estación de trenes de Volgogrado, en un atentado suicida producido el domingo 29 de diciembre. La atacante suicida fue identificada como Oksana Arslánova, de 26 años. Al día siguiente, el lunes 30 de diciembre, al menos 15 personas murieron y otras 41 resultaron en una explosión en el trolebús. También habría sido perpetrado por un atacante suicida.

Los ataques consecutivos aumentan el temor a una campaña concertada de violencia antes de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno, que comienzan el 7 de febrero en Sochi, a unos 690 kilómetros al suroeste de Volgogrado. En un video publicado en internet en julio, el checheno Doku Umarov, líder de los insurgentes que quieren imponer un estado islámico en el Cáucaso Norte, una serie de provincias musulmanas al sur de Volgogrado, instó a los milicianos a usar “la fuerza máxima” para evitar que se celebren los juegos.

“Los terroristas en Volgogrado pretenden aterrorizar a otros en todo el mundo, para que se mantengan alejados de los Juegos Olímpicos de Sochi”, dijo Dmitry Trenin, un analista del Moscow Carnegie Centre. El Comité Olímpico Internacional expresó sus condolencias y su confianza en la capacidad de Rusia de hacer que los Juegos se realicen en un ambiente seguros.

“Desafortunadamente, el terrorismo es un fenómeno global y ninguna región está exenta, por lo cual la seguridad en los Juegos es una prioridad máxima para el COI”, dijo una portavoz en la sede del comité en Lausana. En un comunicado, la cancillería rusa instó a las potencias mundiales a luchar juntos contra “terroristas”. “No daremos marcha atrás y continuaremos con nuestra persistente lucha contra el enemigo insidioso que sólo podemos derrotar estando juntos”, dijo la cancillería.
